#LandoPH: In Talibaew, every home has a boat
The barangay captain of this village in Pangasinan says the boats help ensure zero casualty during flash floods

CALASIAO, Philippines – During and after Typhoon Lando, the residents of Barangay Talibaew in Calasiao, Pangasinan took out their boats.

Almost every family has one, even if they aren’t fishermen.

That’s because Talibaew is besieged 5 to 6 times a year by floods, being near rivers that get swollen during heavy rain or when water is released from the San Roque Dam upriver, said Barangay Captain Elpidio Untalan.

“That village is so used to floods. Almost every house has a boat. Storms for them are almost routine,” said Emil Samson, Social Welfare and Development coordinator of Pangasinan province.

Lando is no different. During its onslaught, families used their boats to evacuate from their homes.

A day after the typhoon’s rains stopped, Talibaew residents are back in their boats, this time to return home and fix what has been broken.

As of posting, there were no Lando casualties in Talibaew. – Rappler.com
