MANILA, Philippines – Is the Philippines ready for the “big one”?

In the event of an earthquake, Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, has these survival tips:

  • Stay indoors if one is already in a house or a structurally-sound building

  • Duck, cover, and hold on to something sturdy

  • After the shaking stops, those indoors should evacuate to a safe open space

On Friday, March 27, the Philippines will hold a nationwide earthquake drill beginning at 9:00am. The drill will involve major government agencies, businesses, and civil society organizations.

The public is encouraged to organize their own earthquake drills at home, in schools or in the office.

Take the #OplanPagyanig challenge!

Everyone can take part in the nationwide earthquake drill. Take the #OplanPaganig challenge and share your video on social media. Here’s how:

  1. Survey the safest places in your home and place of work. Find a sturdy desk or table that can provide cover. Also identify dangerous spots where items can fall on you.

  2. Take a photo or video of yourself practicing duck, cover, and hold. Duck or drop down on the floor. Take cover under a desk or table. If that is not possible, seek cover against an interior wall. Protect your head and neck with your arms

  3. Share the video on social media. Tag people to do the same! Use the hashtag #OplanPagyanig.

MovePH will also hold a Facebook conversation at 2 pm on Thursday, March 26, to discuss earthquake preparedness and safety tips.
