1 killed, 9 hurt in Zamboanga blast
(UPDATED) A woman is killed in the blast at the ground floor of a massage parlor in Zamboanga City, which had been struck by similar incidents earlier this year

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (UPDATED)– An explosion at a massage parlor in Zamboanga City on Thursday evening, July 23, killed one person and wounded 9 others.

Local authorities said that the blast, caused by an improvised explosive device, occurred at the ground floor of the Manly Massage Parlor along San Jose Road at around 9:40 pm Thursday.

Security forces and responders were immediately deployed to bring the victims to the hospital.

Police identified the casualty as Geraldine Miguel, the parlor’s cashier, who died while receiving medical attention.

Six female staff and 3 male patrons were wounded and brought to the hospital for treatment, police spokesman Alexander Mabalot told Agence France-Presse on Friday, July 24.

Investigators sifted through debris on Friday searching for bomb fragments. It was not immediately clear if extremist groups were behind the explosion, he said.

“Our city is under constant threat from terrorist and criminal groups,” Mabalot said.

The city had been rocked by several other bomb blasts this year, among them, a car bomb explosion that killed one person and hurt 48 others in January.

On Good Friday in April, 3 people were hurt in the city following an explosion in front a church in Barangay Ayala near a police station. – with a report from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
