MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will seek the transfer of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to a regular detention cell from the Veteran’s hospital, where she has been under hospital arrest since Dec. 19, 2011.
Comelec chair Sixto Brillantes said they have to check Arroyo’s health condition before formally asking the court for her transfer.
“We have to get first a formal certification from her doctors whether she is ill or not. We want to know her condition now. After that, we will file the appropriate motion with the court,” he told reporters.
Brillantes said he will ask Comelec lawyers to coordinate with Arroyo’s doctors at the Veterans.
It will then be up to the Pasay City Regional Trial Court that is hearing her case to decide on the transfer.
Mrs Arroyo, who is now representative of Pampanga, is facing a non-bailable electoral sabotage case filed by the Comelec in November 2011.
The Southern Police District in Taguig City had prepared a detention cell for Arroyo but her camp resisted her detention there, citing her poor health condition. – Rappler.com
