Another US submarine arrives in Subic
MANILA, Philippines – A US Navy fast-attack submarine arrived in Subic Bay on Tuesday, January 5, the US embassy announced in a statement on Thursday, January 7.
"Texas is one of the most technologically advanced submarines in the world. This submarine is capable of executing a multitude of missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare, mine warfare and shallow water operations," the embassy statement said.
Built in 2002, the submarine measures 377 feet long and weigh more than 7,800 tons when submerged.
The visit of USS Texas is part of its Indo-Asia-Pacific deployment, the embassy said. Its crew of about 135 will be resting in the country, with some of them looking forward to explore the "great outdoors."
The Philippine Navy has no submarines but it has opened a submarine office to prepare for the goal of acquiring at least 3 units to improve its defense capabilities. – Rappler.com
