Malaysian prince, an Army general, takes lessons from PH military
The Philippine military also seeks to learn recruitment and management from the Malaysian general

MANILA, Philippines –  The crown prince of Malaysia’s smallest state, Perlis, visited the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) headquarters on Wednesday, November 2, to get lessons on training and deploying reservists for humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

The prince, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, also serves as the commander of the 504th Regiment of the Malaysian Territorial Army and heads the Malaysian Reserved Officers Training Unit (ROTU) or Pasukan Latihan Pegawai Simpanan (PALAPES).

He holds the rank of brigadier general.

“The engagement envisions to learn from the experience and best practices of both Malaysia and the Philippines on the Reservist and Reserve Officers Training Program,” said AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo.

“The Malaysian delegation would like to learn how best the AFP organize, train, and deploy its Reservists especially in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) Operations among other objectives of the visit,” Arevalo added.

The prince met AFP deputy chief of staff Lieutenant General Salvador Melchor Mison.

The prince also visited the AFP Reserve Command office inside Camp Aguinaldo. He also met AFPRESCOM Commander Colonel Pascual Luis Bedia.

Arevalo said the AFP also learned from the Malaysian Army general how they recruit and manage professionals into the reservist corps.

“There are possible avenues for collaboration between Malaysian ROTU and the AFPRESCOM such as through joint training,” the prince said in a speech on Wednesday.

“It is significant for both countries to work out avenues or areas for future engagements as well as keeping in touch through various medium available, either via informal or formal means,” he added.

The Philippines and Malaysia signed a defense cooperation agreement, the Philippines-Malaysia Military Cooperation Working Group (MCWG).
