Free LRT1 rides for senior citizens, PWDs this Christmas
The free rides will be available on all weekends and holidays from December 3, 2016 to January 8, 2017 in all LRT1 stations

MANILA, Philippines – Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT1) operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) is offering free rides to all senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) this Christmas season.

LRMC said in a statement on Sunday, December 4, that all senior citizens and PWDs holding a concessionary beep card (CBC) can enjoy free rides during all weekends and holidays from December 3, 2016 to January 8, 2017 in all LRT1 stations.

To avail of the complimentary rides, LRMC said the CBC holder should be accompanied by at least two family members and proceed to the teller’s booth in any LRT1 station to activate his or her free ride.

LRMC earlier announced that it is extending LRT1 operating hours to 11 pm until December 23 to serve more commuters.

The LRT1 operator has added 7 more trips every night to address late-night demand.

From December 3 to December 23, LRMC said there will be additional northbound trains from Baclaran every 10 minutes after 9:30 pm and every 15 minutes after 10 pm on weekdays.

The last train from Baclaran is 11 pm until December 23.

From Roosevelt there will be additional southbound trips on weekdays at 10 pm, 10:10 pm, 10:20 pm, 10:30 pm, 10:45 pm, and 11 pm.

On weekends, last trips for Baclaran and Roosevelt stations will be at 11 pm.

Back in August, LRMC added 14 trips to the weekday service hours for early morning and late night commuters.

LRMC is a consortium of Ayala CorporationMetro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), and the Macquarie group.

In September 2014, the transportation department and Light Rail Transit Authority – which originally owned and operated LRT1 – awarded the contract to operate, maintain, and extend LRT1 to LRMC. (READ: Engineers racing to fix LRT1)

Aside from refurbishing the existing rail system, the group will also build an 11.7-kilometer Cavite extension, linking the Baclaran Station to Niog, Cavite.

The extended rail line is expected to help increase the capacity of the LRT1 from 500,000 to 800,000 passengers daily and benefit more than 4 million residents in the southern part of Metro Manila and in Cavite. – Rappler.com
