Davao City barangay captain killed in raid

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – A barangay captain was killed here in a raid Sunday dawn, May 13, after he resisted arrest, authorities said.

Antonio Guatno died in a raid carried out by the police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) XI who was serving a search warrant at his residence in Barangay Pangyan in Davao City.

Guatno’s death was confirmed by Senior Inspector Maria Theresita Gaspan, spokesperson of the Davao City police.

According to a CIDG XI spot report, Guatno “drew his pistol aimed at the raiding team which prompted them to shoot the suspect.”

He was chairman of the barangay in the city’s Calinan district.

The search on Guatno’s residence stemmed from accusations that he violated Republic Act No. 10591 or the Philippine firearms law.

The incumbent barangay captain was rushed to the Isaac T. Robillo Memorial Hospital, but a doctor declared him dead on arrival.

It was later learned that Guatno finished a 6-month Tabangan Atong Reformists Aron Naay Asenso (Tara Na)-CBRAP last January, according to a Facebook post by Ronaldo Rivera, an officer of the city’s anti-drug council.

He said Guatno was second to finish the intensive program which included diagnostic assessment, random drug screening results, a nutrition plan, spiritual activities, sports, psychoeducation, and disaster resiliency training.
