Areas under state of calamity due to Typhoon Ompong

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut) prompted officials to place devastated areas under a state of calamity after the typhoon affected more than 250,000 people in 7 regions, and killed at least 59. 

Here is a list of areas placed under a state of calamity due to Ompong:

Cagayan

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Cagayan approved the request of Governor Manuel Mamba to place the province under a state of calamity on Sunday, September 16.

Also on Sunday, the Tuguegarao City Council declared the city under a state of calamity during a special session in one of the evacuation centers.

Isabela

The province of Isabela was placed under a state of calamity on Monday, September 17, said the Isabela Provincial Information Office on its Facebook page.

Before this, on Saturday morning, September 15, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Ilagan City, Isabela, placed the city under a state of calamity. This was confirmed by Ilagan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Chairman Antonio Montereal.

Abra and Benguet

Officials have placed the provinces of Abra and Benguet under a state of calamity, said Ruben Carandang, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense Regional Office in the Cordillera Administrative Region. The Philippine Information Agency tweeted this information on Sunday morning, September 16.

Mayoyao, Ifugao

The Sangguniang Bayan placed Mayoyao, Ifugao, under a state of calamity through a resolution unanimously adopted and approved on Saturday, September 15, according to the Philippine Information Agency.

Local officials cited the “massive disruption” of electricity, water, and transport systems, and the “extensive destruction of crops and other agricultural products” in Mayoyao due to Ompong.

Ilocos Norte

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Ilocos Norte placed the province under a state of calamity on Monday, September 17. As of Monday, the damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Ilocos Norte was pegged at P3.26 billion.
