ARMM is on heightened alert in anticipation of mass deportation from Sabah

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – Acting Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov Mujiv Hataman said at least 72 Filipinos from Sabah arrived in Tawi-Tawi following clashes between Malaysian state security forces and armed followers of the Sultanate of Sulu.

Out of the 72 displaced individuals, 35 are male, 22 female and 15 are children.

Initial reports reaching Hataman showed that the residents were from Lahad Datu where the “Royal Army” holed up after landing in Sabah and where the fighting started.

Despite the conflict, the residents were able to get on a Tawi-Tawi bound vessel, Hataman said.

Anticipating mass deportation from Sabah, ARMM officials are on heightened alert.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Basulta (Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi) area were placed on blue (heightened) alert and all personnel were told to continuously monitor and update the situation in Sabah.

Over the weekend, over 200 deportees also arrived in Zamboanga City, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The ARMM government created Task Force Tabang Basulta headed by the local official from the Deparrment of the Interior and Local Government. Local disaster agencies also held an emergency meeting to identify the schools and muunicipal gyms in Sulu which could serve as evacuation centers for the deportees.

A crisis management committee was also created by the Western Mindanao Command due to the standoff, the NDRRMC said. – Rappler.com
