MANILA, Philippines – Incumbent Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao once again defeated a member of the powerful Ecleo political clan in the May 13, 2019 elections.

She won the gubernatorial race against Benglen Ecleo, whose family has had a strong hold on power in the province starting with the late Ruben Ecleo Sr who entered the political scene in 1967.

On Tuesday, June 4, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug sits down with governor-elect Bag-ao to discuss the factors that led to his victory against the dynastic rule of the Ecleos, her plans for Dinagat Islands, and her dreams of eliminating or reducing political patronage.

Bag-ao’s latest win is her second against the Ecleos. In 2013, she won the congressional race against Gwendolyn Ecleo, Benglen’s sister.

Bag-ao previously served as Akbayan representative during the 15th Congress. Prior to being a legislator, she did grassroots work with farmers, women, urban poor, and labor groups as a human rights lawyer. (READ: Dinagat: Kaka cracks glass ceiling)
