Re-elected Apayao mayor killed in car crash
MANILA, Philippines – The re-elected mayor of Luna town in Apayao was killed in a car accident past midnight Saturday, June 22, in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, police said.
Mayor Betty Verzola was on board a Mitsubishi Montero sport when the vehicle, driven by Jun Ildefonso, tried but failed to avoid a crossing carabao in Barangay Pasaleng.
Another passenger, Marlon Taclibon, also died.
Chief Supt. Ricardo Marquez, Ilocos police regional director, said the mayor was with the newly elected vice mayor, Josephine Bangsil, Milet Agustine, and Taclibon when the accident occurred at around 1:20 am.
Other reports said they were on their way home after attending a seminar in Baguio City organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government for incoming local officials.
The driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to ram a tree.
The victims were rushed to the Bangui Hospital but Verzola and Taclibon were declared dead on arrival.
The vice mayor-elect and the other passenger and the driver were hurt and being treated.
Verzola and Bangsil ran under different parties in the May local elections. Verzola ran with re-electionist vice mayor Jerome Lacambra under the Liberal Party. – Rappler.com
