ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Residents of Mampang village started fleeing their homes Tuesday afternoon, September 17, as fighting intensified between government troops and members of the Nur Misuari faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in the area.

Troops earlier encountered rebels in the village.

The firefight ensued after the abduction of city police chief Chiquito Malayo by the MNLF Tuesday morning.

Malayo was seized near a mangrove in Mampang after he sought to secure the release of hostages, according to the police.

Early Tuesday, the government announced that at least 115 civilians had either been released or rescued from villages occupied by rebels. This raised hopes that the fighting would soon end.

But the rebels later held hostage Malayo and his two security escorts.

On Monday, September 16, the military declared that 70% of the battle zone had been cleared. – Rappler.com
