MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Attorney Carole Fortun, wife of lawyer Raymond Fortun, was shot in front of their house in BF Homes Almanza, Las Piñas, at 8 pm, Thursday, December 19.

Fortun said his wife just finished serving in the Mass when unidentified suspects on board a motorcycle shot her.

“She sustained a gunshot wound at the right cheek and the bullet exited at the back of the neck,” Fortun told Rappler. She was immediately brought to Perpetual Help Hospital.

Fortun, who served as legal counsel for one of the petitioners who questioned the legality of pork barrel funds, told Rappler the attack could have originally been directed to him.

Raymond Fortun served as the legal counsel of Serendra blast unit owner Marianne Cayton-Castillo. He is also the younger brother of lawyer Philip Sigfrid Fortun, lead counsel of the Ampatuans, who are implicated in a political massacre that killed 58 in 2009.

Fortun said his wife was already in “stable condition.”

Authorities are investigating the incident. – Rappler.com

(In an earlier version of this story, we mistakenly identified Raymond Fortun as the legal counsel of Serendra blast victim Angelito San Juan. Fortun was actually the lawyer of the unit’s owner Marianne Cayton-Castillo. Our apologies. – Editors)
