MANILA, Philippines – A town vice-mayor in Zamboanga Sibugay was shot dead, while his wife was wounded after unidentified men attacked them in Ipil town, late Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011.
According to a report from the Zamboanga Sibugay police, Siay town vice-mayor Carlito Bayawa was alighting from his vehicle to withdraw money from an automated teller machine (ATM) in Barangay Poblacion in Ipil around 5:20pm, when two men on board a motorcycle, opened fire at them.
Bayawa’s wife, Susana, who was waiting in the car, sustained a gunshot wound in her left arm and was rushed to a local hospital.
“Vice-Mayor Bayawa sustained a fatal gunshot wound in the chest,” Supt. Geraldo Abengoza, deputy director of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office said.
It was not immediately known on the motive behind the killing but authorities are not discounting the possibility that it could be “politically-motivated”. – Rappler.com
