ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A vehicular accident in Zamboanga Sibugay on Monday, February 10, claimed the life of a teacher from Sulu traveling to a regional sporting event.

Teacher Abdulajid Lukman was killed, while 14 other people were injured, when the van they were riding fell into a ravine in Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.

They were on their way to Marawi City to attend the annual Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association (ARMMAA), a regional sportsfest.

Lukman was also the driver of the van, according to Jamar Kulayan, Regional Secretary of the DepEd-ARMM.

Among those injured were:

  • Hji. Ayub Ramsani, school supervisor
  • Hji. Kuril Taludjud, principal
  • Hja. Nurhaima Ramsani, principal
  • Sitti Ramsani Mahmud, teacher
  • Andan Tammang, technical official
  • Nur Aina Ramsani, school nurse
  • Students Ferdiliza Ainul, Alhaina Banbon, Marhama Sarri, Ummal Nabri, Sitti Rasma Mahmud, Gerry Hamin, Arjaida Atiulla and Alhaina Bando

The victims were rushed back to Zamboanga City for medical attention.

Ramsani, the school nurse, remains in critical condition and could undergo an operation, due to fractures she sustained from the accident. The rest of the injured victims are now out of danger.

Kulayan said the DepEd regional office will shoulder the medical costs for all the victims, and promised financial assistance to Lukman’s family.

The ARMMAA is a regional competition in preparation for the annual Palarong Pambansa, which will be held in Laguna this coming May.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. – Richard Falcatan/Rappler.com
