MANILA, Philippines – At least 10 people were hurt in a clash between leftists and Muslims in Mendiola Thursday, March 27, radio reports said.

Muslims were praying at a program in Mendiola to mark the signing of the peace deal between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic LIberation Front (MILF) later that day when they were disrupted by members of the CPP-NDF who held a lightning rally and began shouting their slogan, dzMM reported.

A shouting match erupted between the two groups. Reports said the group of Muslims, angered by what they saw as a show of disrespect, ran after the leftists identified as members of the Communist Party of the Philippine-National Democratic Front (CPP-NDF).

Outnumbered, the leftists retreated towards Morayta. The brawl was contained when the police sent additional forces to the area, including members of its SWAT team. The Muslim groups continued their program.

Hundreds of peace process supporters are holding a peace caravan in Mendiola in celebration of the signing of the historic peace agreement at the Malacanang Palace grounds not far away.

Meanwhile, reports said leftist groups marched to Mendiola in connection with the 45th anniversary of the CPP on Saturday, March 29. – Rappler.com
