Tulay ng Pangulo falls to Sendong

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – Salaam Bridge, or Tulay ng Pangulo, is a 75-meter steel bridge in Upper Mandulog, Iligan City built to link Brgy, Mandulog to barangays Lanipao, Dulag, Kalilangan and Panorogangan, four of the 13 hinterland barangays of Iligan. At the height of typhoon “Sendong” on Dec 16, 2011, the bridge collapsed and drifted for about 200 meters down Kapai river along with mud, sand, boulders and uprooted trees. 

The bridge was built under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s President’s Bridge Program (Tulay ng Pangulo). The program uses a concrete-reinforced steel bridges component that links remote barangays from across Mindanao where “the bridges are most needed.” Funding from the project came from the Mindanao National Initiative (Mindanao Natin), a P5.5-billion flagship program of the Arroyo administration “designed to spur and fast-track growth and development in Mindanao.” – Rappler.com
