Police nab suspects in missing handguns worth P12M
The PNP is still trying to locate the 59 missing handguns

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday, May 14, arrested two men believed to have stolen over P11.76 million worth in pistols from a PNP Firearms and Explosives Division (FED) vault.

Arrested were company vault keeper Harold Sumalde and a certain Raymond Lopez. Sumalde admitted to being behind the pilferage of the firearms and tagged Lopez as his accomplice.

In a May 16 statement, the PNP said the heist was discovered on May 14 after representatives from “military and law enforcement solutions” company JOAVI Philippine Corporation conducted a random inventory of their firearms vault in the FEO.

Discovered missing were 59 firearms:

  • 12 pieces CARACAL F
  • 8 pieces SPHINX 3000 COMPACT
  • 16 pieces KRISS VECTOR SDP
  • 3 pieces ARCUS 98 DAC
  • 20 pieces SPHINX COMPACT SDP

According to the PNP, both Sumalde and Lopez have already undergone inquest proceedings before the Quezon City prosecutors’ office for qualified theft and violating the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition.

Lopez was also slapped with additional charges for alleged unlawful possession of a .45 caliber pistol during his arrest in Quezon City.

Both the PNP-FED and the National Capital Region Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (NCR-CIDG) are investigating the case to both recover the missing firearms and to determine the identities of those in possession of the guns.

The stolen firearms have since been placed in the Wanted List of the PNP-FED’s Firearms Information Management System, the PNP said. – Bea Cupin/Rappler.com
