Threats to territorial integrity ‘real and present’ – PH Navy chief
Departing from tradition, the Philippine Navy celebrates its 116th anniversary at the new headquarters of the Naval Forces West, the naval station primarily in charge of the West Philippines Sea

PALAWAN, Philippines – “The menace of various threats to national security and territorial integrity are real and present,” said Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Jesus Millan during the 116th anniversary celebration of the Navy on Tuesday, May 27.

Even as he recognized the “enormity of the challenges” that the poorly equipped navy is facing, the newly installed Flag Officer in Command (FOIC) made a vow in front of President Benigno Aquino III.

“The navy commits to remain steadfast to surmount the odds and meet the expectations of our people,” Millan said.

Tension in the South China Sea continues to escalate. On the same day, Vietnam accused China of attacking and sinking a Vietnamese fishing vessel.

The military moved the Navforwest headquarters to Ulugan Bay in 2011 from its original location in nearby Barangay San Miguel, which faces the inner sea.

Millan said the move makes operations more efficient and saves the military the cost of thousands of liters of gasoline – and time – in bringing its assets to areas they are needed.

The naval station will be upgraded.

“We need to build mission essential facilities like boat houses, hangars, training facilities, additional barracks and other needs in order to respond to the needs of the operations,” said Millan.

The new navy chief also highlighted the support they’re giving the troops deployed in challenging situations.

“We spend for our human resources as much as we do with capital assets and big-ticket items. They are our best weapons,” he said. – Rappler.com
