DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Six members of a joint military and police team were hurt in an encounter with communist rebels in Davao City on Tuesday, July 8, military officials said.
The Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) said combined troops from the 84th Infrantry Brigade and the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP SAF) encountered around 30 members of the New People’s Army in Barangays Baracatan and Catigan in Toril District, Davao City, at around 1:40 pm on Tuesday.
Captain Alberto Caber, EastMinCom spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday, July 9, that the firefight lasted for about 30 minutes, leaving a total of 6 wounded on the government side – 5 from the PNP SAF and one from the 84IB – and an undetermined number from the rebels’ side.
“Wounded personnel were immediately brought to hospital for treatment. Joint pursuit operations are still on going. The troops were on security patrol in the area for the protection of the same community,” Caber said.
On the same day, the NPA claimed that its members killed 6 security forces on top of the 6 others wounded during the encounter. Caber denied the claim. – with reports from Karlos Manlupig/Rappler.com
