Thousands of street protestors call on Putin to resign

Thousands of protesters trooped to the streets in Moscow on Tuesday, June 12, to protest against what they call the “illegitimate” leadership of Russian President Alexander Putin. The protestors call for Putin’s resignation and demand that new elections be held. This is the first protest of its kind since Putin was elected back in March amid allegations of election fraud. Protesters mobilized support on social media using the hashtag “Welcome to the Year ’37” –  a reference to the year Soviet dictator Josef Stalin was in the height of his power. Russians are calling Putin’s new tactics against opposition leaders Stalin-like.
