China investigates forced abortion case

The case of a woman who was forced to undergo an abortion 7 months into her pregnancy will be investigated by government authorities. This is in reaction to the public uproar that an image of the baby’s corpse posted online caused. Feng Jianmei was forced by authorities in north China’s Shaanxi province to undergo an abortion because she failed to pay the fine imposed on women who violate China’s one-child policy. The government of Zhenping county, where the abortion took place, promised a transparent probe under a special committee, even as national family planning officials said perpetrators would be punished.
