Saudi women to compete in 2012 Olympics

Another milestone marks the upcoming Olympic Games: Saudi women can join London 2012 after a favorable ruling by the Saudi Olympic committee. While only one potential female Saudi athlete will likely qualify for this year’s summer sports event — an equestrian jumping contestant, 18-year-old Dalma Malhas — the decision remains a landmark in Saudi Arabia’s history since women have been severly limited to undertake physical activity at home and elsewhere. However, the Saudi regime has been under mounting international pressure to adopt a more liberal approach, with the Olympic board stressing that the Saudis were breaking the spirit of equality.
