CAMPAIGN TRAIL: Marcos Jr., Robredo stage back-to-back rallies in Cebu province

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Fresh off the days-long Holy Week break, presidential candidates Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Leni Robredo are set to hold major rallies in vote-rich Cebu province on Monday, April 18 and Thursday, April 21.

Marcos, fresh off the formal endorsement of local party One Cebu, will be joined by running mate Davao Mayor Sara Duterte and their UniTeam slate for a “grand rally” at the Filinvest Grounds at the South Road Properties in Cebu City. They will only have two other events before this – a “meet and greet” at Parklane Hotel, also in Cebu City, and a mini-rally with PWDs and senior citizens ahead of the grand rally.

Robredo, meanwhile, will be joined by running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan and their Senate slate for a series of rallies around several cities and municipalities in the province, ending with a people’s rally in Mandaue City.

Cebu province is home to over 3.2 million registered voters – making it, as in previous elections, the most vote-rich in 2022.

CONTEXT: Cebu province in 2016 vs 2022

In 2016, it was Leni Robredo who won in most of the province, save for Cebu City, where she was edged out by then Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, running mate of eventual 2016 presidential race winner Rodrigo Duterte. In Lapu-Lapu City and the rest of Cebu province, Robredo had a slight advance over Cayetano. All in all, Robredo got over 800,000 votes from Cebu. In contrast. Marcos Jr. only managed over 310,000 votes in a vice presidential contest he eventually lost.

The times are different now, however. Robredo is no longer the administration candidate and is, in fact, the leading opposition candidate in the 2022 polls. It is also Ferdinand Marcos Jr. who’s geared to enjoy the endorsement of the incumbents – One Cebu a party led by Governor Gwen Garcia, recently inked a deal with the UniTeam alliance.
