National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) counterterrorism chief Raoul Manguerra died after sustaining a gunshot wound inside his office in Manila, authorities said Tuesday, December 8.

According to the report of the Manila Police District (MPD), at around 11:39 pm on Monday, December 7, Manguerra’s driver and an employee heard a gunshot from his office then found him bleeding from his abdomen.

He was rushed to the Manila Doctors Hospital but was declared dead on arrival at 12:02 am on Tuesday.

The NBI is investigating his death. According to the MPD, its team was barred from entering Manguerra’s office to conduct its own investigation.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the NBI said it placed its headquarters on “lockdown” for its probe. It also mourned the death of Manguerra.
