MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A police officer was killed and one barangay tanod was injured after at least 4 armed men opened fire while the two were guarding Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines in Eastern Samar on Saturday, May 11, PNP reported.

The police officer has been identified as PO1 Agerico M. Afable, who was reportedly shot at close range and died on the spot.

Injured tanod Glecerio Gema is currently being treated in Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital.

Ronnie Basana, another barangay tanod escaped injury by pretending to be dead.

Reports from PNP Regional Office 8 Director Chief Superintendent Elmer R. Soria claim that the shooting took place between 3:49 a.m to 4 a.m. in a voting precinct in Brgy. Calingatngan, Borongan, Samar.

The gunmen reportedly fled with Afable’s pistol and PO1 Cesar Yu’s police uniform.

All PCOS machines in the precinct were left untouched.
