Early results of national and local races excite the public while errors in figures send a wave of anxiety across the nation

MANILA, Philippines – Hours after the 7 p.m. closing of poll centers nationwide, early results showed Grace Poe and Loren Legarda leading the senatorial race.

Former President Joseph Estrada is set to win the Manila mayoral race against incumbent Alfredo Lim, whle Leni Robredo, the widow of former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, soared past rival Nelly Villafuerte in the Camarines Sur 3rd district congressional race.

On the other side of the polls, the Comelec suspended the canvassing of national results and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPRCV) had to take back its unofficial tally of election results due to inaccuracies stemming from a scripting error.

With 10,778,981 votes as of 11 p.m, Grace Poe—daughter of the late presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr—led in the early tally of results for the senatorial race. She beats consistent survey topnotchers and re-electionists Loren Legarda and Chiz Escudero.

The early poll results show the Magic 12 include 9 bets from ruling coalition Team PNoy and 3 from opposition team United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

These include Alan Peter Cayetano, Nancy Binay, Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, Bam Aquino, Koko Pimentel, Antonio Trillanes IV, JV Ejercito, Cynthia Villar and Gringo Honasan. Struggling to break into the top 12 are Dick Gordon, Migz Zubiri and Ramon “Jun” Magsaysay Jr in 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

The 11 p.m. results also show that in the congressional race scene, Camarines Sur 3rd district congressional bet Leni Robredo led with 75,004 votes. She soared past rival Nelly Villafuerte who had only 21,640 votes at the time. The race between the two heated up when Robredo, widow of former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, filed disqualification cases against Villafuerte and her husband Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte for alleged vote buying.

In one of the hottest mayoral races in the country, Manila mayorial candidate and former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada leads with 235,672 votes to incumbent mayor Alfredo Lim’s 213,445.

Behind the votes

Voters nationwide felt a tremor of anxiety after Comission on Elections (Comelec) chief Sixto Brillantes Jr announced that the poll body has postponed the official canvassing of senatorial and party list election results that was supposed to begin on Monday evening, May 13.

The start of canvassing was moved to the next day when a more substantial amount of votes will have been collated. Brillantes added that canvassing for local election results would push through Monday night.

But the voting population was aggravated further when poll-watching body PPRCV took back its unofficial consolidated tally of results because of inaccuracies.

Half an hour after the closing of the polls, the PPRCV’s tallies were unusually high. It was later on found out that the bloated results were due to a scripting error. The PPRCV eventually apologized to the public for the error. – Rappler.com
