Misdelivery of ballots stalls proclamation in Negros Occidental
The governor may be proclaimed on May 12, but the proclamation date for other elected officials in lower posts has yet to be known

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The error in delivery of ballots for two localities stalled the proclamation of some winning candidates here in Negros Occidental province, including unopposed Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr.

Some 685 voters of Hinigaran town failed to vote on Monday, May 9, as the official ballots were mistakenly delivered to Eastern Samar.

Provincial Election Supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria said the ballots for one precinct in Barangay Palayog, Hinigaran were mistakenly sent out to Barangay Pinanag-an in Borongan City and vice versa due to “mixed labels.”

The misdelivered ballots have since been pulled out and are now stored in their respective localities.

Ananoria said they are still waiting for the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc whether or not to hold special elections in Hinigaran.

He also asked the en banc to lower the proclamation threshold of 100% to 90% for the gubernatorial post.

With the Comelec granting the request, the governor may be proclaimed on Thursday, May 12.

But it is not yet known when other elected officials for lower posts – such as the vice governor, 5th District board members, and Hinigaran mayor, vice mayor, and councilors – will be proclaimed.

Based on the results of the Consolidation and Canvassing System, incumbent Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson is leading the vice gubernatorial race with 478,783 votes against 4th District Representative Jeffrey Ferrer, who has 466,571 votes.

Hinigaran town has 46,891 registered voters. – Rappler.com
