MANILA, Philippines – Experts view the May 13 elections as a referendum on President Rodrigo Duterte, the leader who called God stupid and said bishops should be killed in this predominantly Christian country.
This atmosphere fuels the motivations of religious groups endorsing candidates in the May 13 elections.
These groups include the People's Choice Movement composed of Catholic and Christian groups, a group of 150 Aglipayan leaders and members that endorsed opposition candidates, and even a Catholic prelate, Novaliches Bishop Antonio Tobias, who openly supported the Otso Diretso opposition slate.
