MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – Opposition senatorial candidate Romulo Macalintal conceded defeat early Tuesday morning, May 14, as the transmission of election results nears completion.

He garnered less than 4 million votes with results from 93.45% of all polling precincts already transmitted as of 8:01 am.

Other senatorial candidates also conceded, including former solicitor general Florin HIlbay, Erin Tañada, and ex-GMA News reporter Jiggy Manicad. 

“The will of the people is supreme, so we respect the results of the elections. Congratulations to all the winners, may you serve the country well,” Hilbay said in a statement.

He thanked his friends, family and supporters, as well as Robredo and opposition campaign manager Senator Francis Pangilinan. 

“To all our HILBAYanihan volunteers: You all did whatever it took, and whatever you could. I am sorry that our resources did not match your brilliance, your heart, and your hope,” Hilbay added.

Otso Diretso bet Erin Tañada also conceded defeat, saying they entered the race with open eyes. “I would like to concede and congratulate all those who won the elections.” 

Manicad thanked his volunteers. “Gusto ko pong magpasalamat sa inyong lahat. Alam niyo po, ang mahigit anim na milyong boto ay malaki at alam ko po ang hirap din ng mga volunteers. Maraming salamat po sa inyong sakripisyo (I want to thank everyone. You know, 6 million votes isn’t a small feat. I recognize the hard work of the volunteers),” Manicad said in a Facebook live video.

Otso Diretso bet Erin Tañada also conceded: “Sa Otso Diretso pinaglalaban pa rin namin ang aming two kandidato, si Sen Bam and Sec Mar Roxas. But I would like to concede and congratulate all those who won the elections.”
