MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm “Lawin” has intensified and continues to move West toward southern Luzon, weather bureau PAGASA said on Friday, September 21.

In its 11 am tropical cyclone warning, PAGASA noted that as of 10 am, Lawin (international codename: Jelawat) was 600 km East of Virac, Catanduanes (13.1°N, 130.6°E), with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 90 km/h.

The tropical storm is moving West-Southwest at 11 km/h and by Saturday morning will be 415 km East of Legazpi City, Albay.

PAGASA said the estimated rainfall amount within the 600 km diameter of Lawin is expected to be 10–20 mm per hour (moderate – intense).

The weather bureau insisted that the tropical storm is still too far to directly affect any part of the country, but advised the public and concerned disaster coordinating councils to continue monitoring the weather disturbance and wait for its next update, to be issued at 5 pm.
