Southwest monsoon bringing more rain to Luzon, Visayas on June 28
MANILA, Philippines – The southwest monsoon or hanging habagat will continue to affect Luzon and the Visayas on Friday, June 28.
In a bulletin issued 4 pm on Thursday, June 27, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that the southwest monsoon is expected to trigger rain in several areas.
Light to heavy monsoon rain
- Metro Manila
- Central Luzon
- Occidental Mindoro
- Oriental Mindoro
Scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms
- Ilocos Region
- Cordillera Administrative Region
- rest of Mimaropa
PAGASA warned that flash floods and landslides are possible in those areas, so residents must be on alert. (READ: FAST FACTS: Tropical cyclones, rainfall advisories)
PAGASA also continues to monitor a low pressure area (LPA) which is still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
This LPA was located 1,165 kilometers east of Mindanao as of Thursday afternoon. PAGASA earlier said it may enter PAR by Saturday, June 29.
There is also a chance that it could develop into a tropical depression in the coming days.
If it becomes a tropical depression inside PAR, it would be the 5th for 2019 and would be given the local name Egay. (READ: LIST: PAGASA's names for tropical cyclones in 2019)
The Philippines gets an average of 20 tropical cyclones annually, but since 2019 is an El Niño year, only 14 to 18 tropical cyclones are expected.
Below is the estimated number of tropical cyclones from July to December:
- July - 2 or 3
- August - 2 to 4
- September - 2 to 4
- October - 2 or 3
- November - 1 or 2
- December - 0 or 1
