MANILA, Philippines – The southwest monsoon or hanging habagat will continue to affect Luzon and Western Visayas on Wednesday, July 3.

In a Facebook Live video past 4 pm on Tuesday, July 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the southwest monsoon is being enhanced by a low pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

According to PAGASA Senior Weather Specialist Chris Perez, this LPA is not expected to directly affect any part of the country.

But the enhanced southwest monsoon is expected to trigger the following until Wednesday:

Light to heavy monsoon rain

• Bataan
• Zambales

Scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms

• rest of Luzon
• Western Visayas

Flash floods and landslides remain possible in those areas, especially during heavy rain or severe thunderstorms. (READ: FAST FACTS: Tropical cyclones, rainfall advisories)

Class suspensions have been announced for Wednesday. (READ: #WalangPasok: Class suspensions, Wednesday, July 3)

The heavy monsoon rain in the past couple of days also prompted class suspensions.

So far, the Philippines has had 5 tropical cyclones in 2019, all classified as tropical depressions. (READ: LIST: PAGASA’s names for tropical cyclones in 2019)

The Philippines gets an average of 20 tropical cyclones annually, but since 2019 is an El Niño year, only 14 to 18 tropical cyclones are expected.

Below is the estimated number of tropical cyclones from July to December:

• July – 2 or 3
• August – 2 to 4
• September – 2 to 4
• October – 2 or 3
• November – 1 or 2
• December – 0 or 1
