MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Ompong (international codename Vongfong) has maintained its strength on Wednesday afternoon, October 8, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
At 4 pm Wednesday, PAGASA said the eye of Ompong was located at 995 km east of Tuguegarao City with maximum winds of 215 km per hour and gustiness of up to 250 km per hour.
It is still moving west northwest, away from the country and towards Japan, at 9 km per hour.
The US Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) already classified Ompong as a Super Typhoon, while the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said its classification of “violent” makes it so far the strongest storm on the planet for 2014, and the strongest since November 2013’s Typhoon Haiyan.
