MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Ompong (international codename Vongfong) has slightly weakened on Thursday afternoon, October 9, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
At 4 pm Thursday, PAGASA said the eye of Ompong was located at 866 km east of Calayan, Cagayan, with maximum winds of 205 km per hour and gustiness of up to 240 km per hour.
It is still moving north, away from the country and towards Japan, at 9 km per hour. (READ: Ompong turns north, targets Japan)
The US Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) already classified Ompong as a Super Typhoon, while the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said its classification of “violent” makes it so far the strongest storm on the planet for 2014.
