MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Dodong (international codename Noul) continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Philippines’ northernmost islands Monday, May 11.

The center of the typhoon was at the vicinity of Basco, Batanes as of 6 am Monday, with maximum sustained winds of 160 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 195 km/h, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

Batanes, and the Babuyan and Calayan island groups are currently under public storm warning signal number 3.

Northern Cagayan, meanwhile, is under signal number 2, while the rest of Cagayan, and the provinces of Apayao and Ilocos Norte are under storm signal number 1.

Heavy to intense rainfall is still expected within the storm’s 100 km diameter, and storm surges of up to 1.5 meters are still possible in the town of Gonzaga in Cagayan.

Dodong is moving at a speed of 19 km/h towards the north, and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Tuesday morning, May 12.

It is forecast to move past Taiwan’s eastern seaboard and towards the southern Japanese islands in the coming days.
