British American Tobacco stubs out 2,300 jobs, as vaping casts cloud

British American Tobacco, the maker of Dunhill and Lucky Strike cigarettes, says the job cuts would ensure savings which can be reinvested in new product categories

Cigarette giant British American Tobacco reported on Tuesday a 29-percent drop in pre-tax profits to £2.588 billion pounds (3.796 billion euros, 4.503 billion dollars) in 2005, but the results were skewed by big deals in 2004. BAT also expressed "regret" at a decision earlier this month by Britain's parliament to approve a total ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces in England, following similar moves in Ireland and other European countries.
