Ateneo sweeps UST in V-League opening

MANILA, Philippines — Alyssa Valdez opened the 10th Shakey’s V-League first conference with a bang, leading Ateneo de Manila University to a straight-sets domination of rival University of Santo Tomas Sunday, April 7, at the jampacked FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Valdez scored 22 points off 17 hits, four aces and a block for the Lady Eagles, who swept the Golden Tigresses, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 before more than 5, 000 people at the oven-hot venue.

With the win, the three-peat-seeking Ateneo crew spoiled the return of UST crowd darlings in Aiza Maizo and Rhea Dimaculangan. 

Rachel Daquis, playing her first game for the Blue and White, contributed 12 points while Jem Ferrer dominated the setting battle with 24 excellent sets for the Lady Eagles.

“Nangangapa pa kami kay Rachel. Malaking adjustment ito para sa amin,” said coach Roger Gorayeb, who revealed that Daquis has been practicing with the team for just four days.

Gorayeb added that superstar Gretchen Ho, Dzi Gervacio and Ailysse Nacachi are in the official roster for this conference, but insisted that the decision to play will be solely the trio’s to make.

Meanwhile, Maizo — apparently a few pounds heavier after a two-year hiatus — still managed to pump in 12 points highlighted by 10 kills for the Tigresses while Carmela Tunay added 10 in a losing cause. – Rappler.com
