DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — Known for its verdant surroundings and sparkling waters, host province Negros Oriental aims to make this year’s Palarong Pambansa cleaner and greener by promoting environmentally-friendly practices throughout the games.

Delegates from each of the 17 regions in the Philippines will be obliged to plant at least 10 indigenous trees in their billeting areas as a part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) National Greening Movement, an undertaking aimed to curb the negative effects of Climate Change.

The Department of Education, likewise, recently released a memo urging all participants and officials of the games to bring and use their own washable plates and kitchen utensils instead of using traditional Styrofoam and plastic eating materials.

Proper waste segregation and disposal will also be enforced in the duration of the Palaro while burning of trash will be prohibited.

“Other than the values that are inherent in sports, let every Palaro bring out a deeper sense of solidarity for the environment among all the Palaro stakeholders,” Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro said.

Awards will also be given during the closing ceremonies for the Best School Host Billeting Area, Most Discipined Delegation, Most Organized Delegation and Most Clean, Green, and Eco-Friendly Billeting School and Delegation. – Rappler.com
