FEU hands Ateneo second straight loss

FEU zoomed ahead in overtime to hand Ateneo its second straight loss.

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University handed 5-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University its second straight setback in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Wednesday, July 3, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Tamaraws overcame a slow start to beat the Blue Eagles in overtime, 79-75, for their second consecutive win and claimed the solo top spot with a 2-0 card before a crowd that included NBA legend Sam Perkins.

Guard Terrence Romeo paced FEU with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals and iced the game with two free-throws to complete a night when he shot 12-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe. 

Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena missed the game with an injured right ankle but burly Ryan Buenafe stepped up in his absence with a UAAP career-high 29 points and 15 rebounds.

“Ateneo is a very strong team,” said Tamaraws coach Nash Racela. “We need to get all the wins we can get. Even if it is an ugly win, we’ll take it.” – Rappler.com
