MANILA, Philippines – World Cup 2014 action continued as Italy faced Costa Rica in a crucial Group D showdown at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil.
Italy was the favorite to win the game. In the only previous meeting between the two nations, Italy defeated Costa Rica in a 1994 friendly match.
The team even had England’s support as a win would keep the UK team’s hopes alive in the tournament.
However, Costa Rica was the better team and received vindication when Brian Ruiz scored the only goal of the game at the 43rd minute after the officials did not call what could have been a penalty for Joel Campbell when he was tackled as he was about to take a shot.
