Update: Paralympics photo contest open to Filipinos and official London 2012 song released.

MANILA, Philippines – London 2012 is not just about the Olympic Games but about the Paralympic Games as well. As with the Olympics, the Paralympic Games are the pinnacle of an athlete’s career.

In an effort to put the spotlight on athletes with disabilities, British Embassy and the British Council, in cooperation with PhilSPADA-NPC Philippines and London 2012 world-wide partner Samsung launched the “I Can” Photo Competition. The contest seeks photos that show physically-challenged individuals playing sports or living actively.

“This competition does not only celebrate the countdown to Paralympics, it also shines the light on disability sport at the grassroots level,” said British Embassy Chargé d’ Affaires Trevor Lewis. “We want to harness the opportunity the Games present to bring about a change in the way people think, feel and behave towards disability and disability sport to create a more open and inclusive society.”

The contest will run from 1 to 30 July and is open to all residents of the Philippines. Professional and amateur photographers are welcome to join. Finalists will be announced during the first week of August. Ten finalists will be selected by a panel of judges, and the winner will be chosen from the ten. There will also be special awards for the photo with the most votes on Facebook and for the best published photo (the latter is specifically for members of media).

All finalists will receive a mobile phone courtesy of Samsung. The overall winner and the special category winners will each win a Samsung tablet.

The Olympic rings weighing 3 tons and measuring 25 meters wide and 11.5 meters tall hung beneath the bridge to mark the final countdown leading to the Games.

Official London 2012 song released

“Survival” is the title of the London 2012 official song, aired for the first time Wednesday, June 27 on BBC radio.

The anthem was written and sung by British rock trio Muse, who also helped carry the Olympic torch through their hometown in southwest England. The song was written with the Olympics in mind.

Athletes will march to the song come from July 27-August 12 before the beginning of their events and during awarding ceremonies.
