Banding like brothers, world champion Jerwin Ancajas sweats it out with Olympics-bound Eumir Marcial

There they were, together again. Training side by side, sparring, and getting ready to chase more boxing glory.

World champion Jerwin Ancajas and Olympics-bound Eumir Marcial sweated it out on Friday, May 7 in Zamboanga City.

Fulfilling his promise to help Marcial prepare for this month’s Asian Boxing Championships and the Tokyo Games from July 23 to August 9, Ancajas hooked up with the gold medal prospect at the Navarro family boxing gym refurbished by sportsman Junnie Navarro for Marcial’s preparations.

Ancajas, Marcial, and former world title challenger Jonas Sultan banded as brothers following seven months of living in the same house in Los Angeles, California.

Marcial made a successful pro debut against American Andrew Whitfield last December while Ancajas, with Sultan as main sparring partner, retained the International Boxing Federation super flyweight crown against Mexican Jonathan Rodriguez on April 10 in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Though Freddie Roach was Marcial’s designated trainer, Ancajas, his head trainer Joven Jimenez, and Sultan provided company and offered tips and suggestions which the power-puncher found useful in posting a clear unanimous decision over Whitfield.

Marcial returned the favor in the ninth title defense of Ancajas, who agreed to Marcial’s proposal for him and Jimenez to spend some time in Zamboanga, both for work and recreation.

Designated by the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission to supervise Marcial’s training heading to the Asian elite men and women tournament from May 21 to June 1 is Gerson Nietes, a quarterfinalist in the 2008 World Youth Championships in Mexico.

Due to the dearth of local middleweight boxers, Marcial settled for his light welterweight cousin, Anthony Marcial, for partner play last Saturday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Ancajas and Marcial took a side trip to Dipolog City, where they paid a courtesy call on Mayor Daryl Uy before training and relaxing at the beach and resthouse of Big Boss Cement owner Engr. Gilbert Cruz.

Ancajas and Jimenez returned to Manila on Saturday to attend to more commitments and appearances, leaving Marcial behind for a while.

But if their schedule will allow it, Ancajas and Jimenez intend to come back. – Rappler.com
