Rappler Talk Sports: Jimmy Alapag on Alab Pilipinas’ ABL championship romp
MANILA, Philippines – A living PBA legend orchestrated the Philippines’ return to the top of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
Jimmy Alapag, the former Gilas Pilipinas team captain, steered Alab Pilipinas to the ABL championship right on his coaching debut.
Under his watch, Alab downed the imposing Mono Vampire Basketball Club of Thailand in a thrilling best-of-5 title series that reached full distance.
Ray Parks, Renaldo Balkman and Justin Brownlee starred as the Philippines ruled the regional league for the first time since the Philippine Patriots in 2010 and the San Miguel Beermen in 2013.
Despite Alab’s impressive playoff run – which included sweeps of Vietnam’s Saigon Heat and defending champion Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions – the squad struggled early in the season.
