Brian Hachuela and Andre Minas power the Greenies to the 12-Under crown as Andrew Chio and Yuan Yu star in the Stallions' 10-Under title run

MANILA, Philippines – The La Salle Green Hills Greenies targeted a double championship, but the Xavier School Golden Stallions managed to steal one in the 2018 Smart City Hoops Summer Classic.

La Salle Green Hills Greenies outlasted the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Staglets, 65-58, to capture the 12-under championship.

Brian Hachuela paced the Greenies with 17 points and 18 rebounds while tournament Most Valuable Player Andre Minas added 14 points.

However, Xavier foiled a double celebration as the Stallions capped their Cinderella run by stunning the erstwhile unbeaten Greenies, 39-34, to bag the 10-under crown.

Mythical Five member Andrew Chio led Xavier with 14 points and 9 rebounds while Yuan Yu finished with a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds.

In the 12-under title match, the Greenies turned a slim 35-33 lead into a 47-36 advantage in the 3rd frame behind the frontline of Hachuela and Minas.

La Salle’s lead ballooned to 16 points, 64-48, with 2:58 left, but San Sebastian had one last rally in them, going on a 10-0 run capped by a split on the stripe by Geof Lopez that cut the lead to just 6 with 52 seconds remaining.

The run, however, fell short as the Greenies held on to secure the championship.

Carl Galindez stepped up for the Staglets with 14 points and 7 steals as  Mythical Five team member Lopez was limited to just 9 points on a 3-of-13 shooting.

UPSET WIN. Xavier stuns the erstwhile unbeaten La Salle Green Hills to cop the 10-under title.

In the10-under contest, Xavier surged ahead with an 8-0 run behind the duo of Lance Tangsoc and Yuan Yu to gain a 32-27 lead with 3:32 remaining in the contest.

La Salle countered to trim the lead to just a point with 1:13 left. The Greenies later went for the go-ahead basket as La Salle’s Dom Tuason went for a daredevil drive to the hoop. However, he was called for a travelling violation, denying the Greenies the made bucket.

Free throws by Rambert Lagar, Tangsoc, and Yu sealed the upset win for Xavier that also snapped La Salle’s streak at 6. Moreover, they helped lock down tournament MVP Tuason to just 7 points on 1-of-11 shooting while forcing 12 turnovers.
