World Hoops Clinics returns with blockbuster coaching panel

Basketball sessions aim to focus on the European style of coaching

MANILA, Philippines – The spotlight will be on the European style of coaching when the World Hoops Clinics returns to the Philippines for its second edition, WHC 2.0, following a hugely successful inaugural event last year.

Coaches from all over the Philippines and Southeast Asia will attend the clinic from June 1 to  3 at the MGC New Life Christian Academy gymnasium in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

The clinic will also feature a coaching panel with a strong EuroLeague and international basketball experience as discussion will center on the European coaching style, which has been lauded internationally for its emphasis on discipline and player development.

Meralco Bolts head coach and many time PBA champion coach Norman Black, Lyceum Pirates mentor Topex Robinson, as well as clinic director and vastly experienced international coach Tab Baldwin will also be part of the international panel.

Italian coaching icon Andrea Mazzon, who has EuroLeague experience with Aris of Thessaloniki as well as stints in the Italian and Greek professional leagues, will also be among the guest coaches.

Current New Zealand Tall Blacks head coach Paul Henare will also attend, and with the recent success against China in the FIBA 2019 Asian Qualification under his belt, his insights will be immensely interesting for Philippine coaches familiar with the difficulties of conquering the Chinese.

Ertugrul Erdogan, the current assistant coach of the powerful Turkish national team known as the “12 Giant Men,” will also be there to share his experience in the Turkish professional league as the head coach of BBSK and as former EuroLeague mentor of the iconic Fenerbahce Club, the current EuroLeague defending champions.

The final presenter in the international coaching panel will be Vasilis Fragkias, former coach of the Qatar national team who has extensive experience in professional coaching in the Greek professional leagues for over 20 years.  Vasilis is also an experienced clinician, having just presented this April at the prestigious Athens International Coaching Clinic to over 1,000 basketball coaches.  He is a well respected professional coach and a most entertaining speaker.

Coach Pablo Prigioni, who previously committed to speak at WHC 2.0, will not be available to attend as he has recently been offered a coaching opportunity with the Brookly Nets as a development coach.  He has committed, though, that he is very keen to be a part of a future WHC event.

The panel will cover an array of topics from transition offense and defense to building a man-to-man defensive system.  There will also be more specific topics such as the multiple methods of defending the pick-and-roll and a presentation on offense plays for special situations, plus much more.

All clinic information, including registration details, are available on the WHC Facebook page, “World Hoops Clinic” or on the WHC Instagram account “whc.tab“.

The first 300 coaches to register will receive gift pack from corporate partners led by Smart Communications, Unilab, the Meralco Bolts, Ignite Property Holdings, Bounty Fresh Chicken and Uratex Beds.
