MPBL warns Parks: Repeat offense may lead to severe sanction

MANILA, Philippines – The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Commissioner’s Office warned Mandaluyong player Ray Parks on Saturday, June 16, for his disparaging statements after his team lost to the Muntinlupa Cagers during the league opener.

Parks, a two-time Asean Basketball League (ABL) Most Valuable Player, took a swipe at the officiating and even said the fledgling league doesn’t want him. (READ: ‘They don’t want me in this league,’ says Ray Parks after MPBL debut)

In a letter addressed to Parks, league commissioner Kenneth Duremdes told the player that being part of the league means he has to abide by the rules and regulations.

“While it’s true that everyone can express their opinion, please bear in mind that you are now part of the MPBL family, hence, as a player, you need to abide by the league rules and regulations. You are now representing MPBL,” said Duremdes.

The commissioner added that repetition of a similar incident would result into a more severe sanction.      

Like many basketball fans, Duremdes was excited to see Parks – who boasts impressive credentials since his varsity years with National University – as he brings his act to the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league in the country.

But Parks let out a tirade after his debut with the Mandaluyong El Tigre, who lost to last conference’s runner-up Muntinlupa Cagers, 74-86, on opening day last Tuesday, June 12.

 “I’ll be honest, they don’t want me in this league,” Parks told sportswriters. “First time I’ve ever seen in my life, four offensive fouls. I attended the orientation, I know what the foul is.”

 “I’m taking it as a challenge. They don’t want me here. It’s my home. I enjoyed playing in front of the crowd as much as I could. But at the end of the day, it’s just a stepping stone for me,” he added.  

Before the conference kicked off, the son of former 7-time PBA Best import Bobby Parks also questioned the league’s new rule on Filipino-foreigners. (READ: Local or Fil-Am? MPBL to check Ray Parks’ documents)

Still, Duremdes hopes to see Parks showcase his full potential in Mandaluyong’s succeeding games, while at the same time, serve as a role model off the court.
