Filipino pro dunker David Carlos advances to 3×3 World Cup dunk finals
Team Philippines nets mixed results in the slamdunk qualifier

MANILA, Philippines – David Carlos emerged as the sole finalist for the Philippines in the FIBA 3×3 World Cup 2018 dunk qualifiers on Sunday, June 10.

The Filipino pro dunker tallied a total of 47 points that merited him a finals slot.

Carlos began his act by jumping over 4 people lined up in a column and successfully displayed a half windmill. However, he hit the last person whom he used as a prop.

In the second round, Carlos ran down the baseline, collected the ball from the first person he used as an obstacle and finished it with a two-handed reverse slam and a backboard kick.

France’s Guy “Frequent Flyer” Dupuy topped the competition with 53 points, while Ukraine’s Vadym “Miller” Piddubchenko and Dmytro “Smoove” Krivenko scored 48 and 47 points, respectively.

Carlos – an NCAA juniors title holder with San Sebastian College in 2006 and a former University of Santo Tomas team B member – started his dunking career in 2013.

The 30-year-old also won the 2017 FIBA 3×3 World Tour Chengdu Masters Slam Dunk Contest, besting Polish dunking star Rafal “Lipek” Lipinski last September.

Rey Guevarra, the Philippine bet in the 2015 FIBA 3×3 World Tour dunk contest,  failed to advance after his combined 19 points placed him at 6th in the qualifiers.

The Phoenix Fuelmasters guard’s chances were slim after 3 unsuccessful attempts in the second round. – Rappler.com
