Romeo battles flu, leads Globalport past Barako Bull in OT
Terrence Romeo scorches Barako Bull for 21 points despite spending 3 days in bed recovering from the flu

MANILA, Philippines — No flu virus could stop Terrence Romeo from playing his game as he and the Globalport Batang Pier withstood the Barako Bull Energy’s charge in overtime, 105-91, in the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, November 8 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

The offensive-minded guard torched the Energy with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-16 field goal shooting despite still recovering from flu that left him bed-ridden for 3 days.

“Not to be conceited but I know I can still do more considering I only practiced once just yesterday (before this game) because I got sick,” said the Gilas Pilipinas member in Filipino as he kept sniffing from the colds after the game.

“When I practiced yesterday I just kept shooting here in the venue and I came here early again today to shoot. It’s important to be professional and focused on the game. You must still stay strong.”

Last season’s Most Improved Player did not even look winded during the game let alone sick as he took over in overtime, dropping 8 points to finally create separation from the resilient Barako Bull.

“Romeo missed two practices due to the flu and still has colds. I limited his minutes,” said head coach Pido Jarencio in Filipino as Romeo came off the bench and played only 28:11 minutes.

“I was trying to gauge how he would play but he’s just talented. He has the desire to win so he has the intensity.”

Romeo went on a solo 5-0 spurt that included a booming triple to break an 87-all deadlock and notch a 92-87 Globalport advantage with 2:14 left in extra time.

Jay Washington later drained the dagger 3-pointer with 49 seconds left, 95-89, to put the game out of reach and the Batang Pier improved to a 2-1 record.

“We put in extra effort during overtime that’s why we won by this margin,” said Jarencio. “This is a big win for us because it’s like preparation for our game against Rain or Shine on Friday.”

Reigning Rookie of the Year Stanley Pringle and veteran guard Joseph Yeo played heavy minutes as their backcourt partner Romeo paced himself.

Pringle clocked in close to 44 minutes and, despite missing all 4 of his attempts from downtown, amassed an impressive double-double of 19 points and 17 rebounds to go with 6 assists and two steals.

Yeo shot 3-for-5 from long range for 13 markers and 3 dimes in 36:20 minutes while Washington contributed 11 points and 7 boards.

“Hats off to J-Wash with that big shot,” Jarencio said of Washington’s dagger triple. “He recovered after a bad game. His 3-pointer was crucial.”

Big man Doug Kramer asserted himself in the paint to post 16 points and 9 rebounds as Globalport dominated the battle of the boards, 66-38.

Globalport eked out the victory after Barako Bull rallied from 15 points down and made it a tight contest in the payoff period.

JC Intal put the Energy in a position to steal the win after he drained the game-tying turnaround jumper, 85-all, against the defense of Keith Jensen as time expired in regulation.

Barako Bull previously had a chance to ice the game but Jensen missed two charities with 8 seconds remaining in the fourth as possession shifted to Globalport.

The Batang Pier then outscored their foes, 20-6, in overtime to seal the deal.

Intal’s confidence continues to soar coming off his national team stint as he had a team-high 17 points to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assits. Willy Wilson added 14 markers and 7 boards while Chico Lanete and Jervy Cruz chipped in 13 points apiece as Barako Bull slipped to 1-2. — Rappler.com
